Berylwood Head Start

In mid-November before the Thanksgiving holiday, CDR’s Berylwood Head Start Center in Simi Valley, hosted a fun and interactive Family Night. The event borrowed from the popular Make & Take activity taken directly from the Teaching Pyramid Resource Guide.

The Teaching Pyramid is a framework for early childhood educators and families to promote young children’s social-emotional development. This helps to prevent challenging behaviors using a tiered system built on a foundation of effective workforce training. This tool is used in the Head Start classroom when teaching children about their emotions and how to self regulate. Parents and children also made their own pinwheel to use and take home.

Rio Lindo Head Start

In early January, Rio Lindo Head Start Center in north Oxnard hosted Family Nights. This gathering is held every other month and allows staff and parents to get the latest update on their child’s progress at Head Start, share center business, build relationships with staff and other parents, and to share ideas of how parents can further interact with their child outside of school.

“This is a great opportunity to discuss any concerns parents may have, to meet other families, and to discuss children’s progress,” said Jennifer Torres, Site Supervisor at Rio Lindo Head Start. “During the meeting they participate in activities, a workshop is provided for parents, and snack is given to the families. Overall, Family Nights builds that home to school connection,” said Torres.
