The day before the Thanksgiving holiday, CDR’s Westview Head Start center in Ventura, held a Friendsgiving gathering for staff and center families. Maricela Cabrera, Head Start Cook, prepared the meal that included turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, and of course, pumpkin and apple pie for dessert.

Staff also planned a cooking demo to give parents the opportunity to see how the Head Start center incorporates cooking experiences into its weekly lesson plans. The hands-on experience had parents and their children preparing a tasty and healthy fruit salad.

“This event was originally scheduled to be our bi-monthly family night at the center,” said Julie Hutchins, Site Supervisor. “We decided instead to make it a light dinner and call it a Friendsgiving Family Night,” she said.

The parents that attended said they enjoyed the evening of delicious food, laughter, and engagement. They were also interested in planning another experience like this for the month of January.

“Myself and Brenda Morales, our Family Services Specialist, created this idea to allow our families to experience an evening of gathering together before the busy holidays take place,” said Hutchins. “This was a moment for all of us to enjoy some quality time, and to share how we’ve been feeling lately. A few participants expressed how thankful they were for this evening,” Hutchins added.
